The Reagan administration formally declared Thursday it would sell arms to friendly countries without looking too closely at their human rights policies. The new guideline dumps former President Carter’s rule against weapons deliveries to countries with a record of citizen abuse. "We will deal with the world as it is, rather than as we would like it to be" an administration statement said. William R. Roberson, Jr., a prominent Washington (N. C.) businessman was named as Secretary of the Department of Transportation Thursday by Gov. Jim Hunt. The All England Lawn Tennis Club Thursday announced that Wimbledon champion John McEnroe, would not be invited to become a member of the exculsive club “because his on court behavior brought the game into disrepute." All previous singles champions have automatically been accorded honorary membership. Dr. Willard Parsons spoke to the Tryon Kiwanis Club last Tuesday on "Volcanoes.” He Continued On Back Page Tryon Lions To Install Officers Tuesday The Tryon Lions Club will install its new officers Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. Past District Governor J. W. (Red) Hoyle of the Asheville Lions Club will install the following officers: President, Richard Radford; First Vice Pres., G.L. Pace, Jr.; Second Vice Pres., John Vollmer; Third Vice Pres., Harold Taylor; Secretary, Charles E Melton; Treasurer, Ellis Fincher; Tail Twisters: Bill Sherlin and James Cowan; Lion Tamers: James Bodie and James Newsome; One Year Directors: Ellis Fincher, Earl Brendall and Stanley Hooker; Two Year Directors: Marvin Page and Bill Hooker; Lion Chaplain, Dr Earl Brendall. Mr Radford has been active in Lions Club work for a number of years. He was a charter member of Pisgah Forest Lions Club, and this is his second term as president of the Tryon Lions Club, which he has also served as broom sales chairman. He has been with Public Service Gas Co. for 22 years, having worked in Asheville and Brevard before coming to Tryon in 1970 In addition to his Lions Club activities Mr. Radford has been active in the Tryon Boosters Club and is the current president He has served as a manager of a Continued On Back Page TCC Women Golf At Glen Cannon Margaret Hannon won low gross with an 81 and Betty Gibson won low putts at the Blue Ridge outing, July 9, at Glen Cannon Country Club, Brevard. Other TCC women participating were Nancy Steuerwald, Phyllis Prout. Adie Kirby, Dot Girardeau, Jane Snowden, Gwen Hamrick and Dot Cleveland. Transportation Update For Senior Citizens June 30, ended the third quarter for Polk County’s transportation program for senior citizens. This program is federally funded and coordinated through The Meeting Place in Tryon. 482 people were transported throughout the county during the second quarter. At the end of the third quarter the service was provided to 559 people for a total increase of 77 people. This averages to be about 9 trips daily out into Polk County. Participation in the program has increased tremendously since its beginning in October, Any senior citizen resident of Polk County in need of this service, and without other means of transportation, call The Meeting Place, 859-5411, between 9 00 a m and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday 4-H Organizational Meeting Tonight There will be a 4-H Club organizational meeting tonight at 7 o’clock at the Hickory Grove- Pacolet Hill Community Building. Children 9 to 19 are invited. Red Fox WGA Willa Reed with a 34- had low net on odd holes Thursday for the WCA event at Red Fox Country Club. Mrs. W. Foster Young of Scotsdale. Ariz. (formerly of Greenville, N. C.) is visiting her sister, Mrs. Albert Johnson and Mr. Johnson in Tryon.
